Craft NB Workshop Series: Foraged Plant Fibre Basketry Workshop with Ralph Simpson

This basketry workshop is designed for beginners and has the scope to accommodate the interests of intermediate basket weavers as well. I will be introducing locally collected plant fibres. Participants will learn about foraging for plant fibres, processing, and storage techniques, and how to prepare the fibres for use in weaving.
Workshop runs from 9 – 4:30 pm with a break for lunch.
The cost is $150 and includes all materials necessary for creating a  basket.
Participants are required to bring a pair of scissors, a measuring tape, a spray bottle and a hand towel.

Ralph Simpson was born in Hillsborough, New Brunswick. He was employed as a Forest Research Biologist for many years.

After retirement, he returned to school at NBCCD to study Visual Art. His focus now is artistic, and he still spends many hours in the woods as he explores the potential of plant and wood fibre to create baskets and sculpture. His chosen media are black ash, willow, maple, cedar bark, and plant fibres endemic to New Brunswick. In collecting plant fibre, he uses harvest principles that embrace environmental integrity and sustainability.

 Ralph combines his deep respect and study of traditional weaving techniques with his own innovations. He enjoys utilizing a wide variety of materials and techniques as part of his artistic practice of creating work that focuses on form, process, and materiality.

Inspired by the local environment and nature’s forms he creates contemporary sculptural forms. He is a full-time artist and works out of his studio in Fredericton, NB.

Cancellation Policy
Please note that due to admin costs we incur for processing refunds, there is a $10 cancellation fee. If you cancel two weeks before the scheduled event, we will refund you the full amount minus the $10 cancellation fee. If you cancel within one week before the event, we will refund you 50% of the cost of the event minus the $10 cancellation fee. We can not offer any refund for cancellations on the day of the event.
